Delaware Students to Compete in Virtual Envirothon Competition April 22-25

Dover, Del., April 20, 2021 – High school students representing five schools and one 4-H team will compete virtually for the title of 2021 Delaware Envirothon champions and to win college scholarships and prizes. The virtual competition will test students’ knowledge and practical application of various environmental topics, including this year’s special environmental topic,“Water Resources Management: Local Control and Local Solutions.”

Ten teams entered the 2021 competition. They include Calvary Christian Academy in Dover, The Charter School of Wilmington, Middletown High School FFA, Newark Charter School, Odessa High School FFA, and the Peach Blossom 4-H team from Kent County.

Since the pandemic prevented in-person training workshops during the 2020-2021 school year, the Delaware Envirothon Planning Committee moved to an online platform at www.delawareenvirothon.org, and provided weekly tips and posts on the Envirothon Facebook page according to Rick Mickowski, Chair of the Delaware Envirothon. “Pivoting to a virtual event was a challenge for both the resource experts and for the team advisors and students,” said Mickowski. “We appreciate the time and effort of everyone to work out the details of holding all virtual activities.” In addition to taking a virtual test on the topics of air quality, aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife, and the current issue of water resources management, each team prepared a recorded power point presentation for judging on April 22.

The Delaware Envirothon marked its 25th anniversary in 2020 but will celebrate in 2021 due to last year’s event cancellation. The DE Envirothon is a program of the Delaware Association of Conservation Districts. Conservation Districts provide locally led conservation work and solutions to Delaware landowners and farmers. The winners will be announced during a virtual awards ceremony on April 29. The winning team will represent Delaware in the virtual 2021 National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon coming out of Lincoln, Nebraska at the end of July.
